Abstract

This paper analyzes the aspects that make a local English distinctive by
taking Indian English as an example and examining its distinctive characteristics
through applying a framework of the feature-based approaches. Firstly, a general
introduction is provided to review the emergence of the various varieties of English in
different places. Then, a framework of the feature-based approaches is to be introduced
in the second part. In addition, a detailed sample-based analysis of the characteristics
of the Indian English is to be presented from the perspectives of phonology, lexis,
grammar, and discourse respectively. At last, a conclusion is to be drawn about what
has been discussed in this paper.
