Abstract

This paper mainly attempts to discuss a detail study of Meitei kinship terms more specially on the Meitei
compound words. The kinship terms are differentiated by various features, by sex, as father and mother;
by generation, as son and daughter; and by lineal relation, as uncle etc. In the present study, the kinship
term is analysed into various groups and sub‐groups on the basis of their meaning and structure. The
formation of Meitei Kinship term is first started from the clan level, then at lineage and extends at the
family level. The components of compound words and its different orders show the different functions of
compound in the language.
