The paper explores the ways in which the learning spaces arrangement conveys meaning and patterns of student participation. The paper applies the semiotic approach whereby the classroom design, spatial organization, and material objects are viewed as systems of signs that affect interaction and engagement. The issue is the scant attention paid to the impact of physical and symbolic features of learning spaces on participation outside the teaching techniques. This paper is theoretical and interpretive, and it summarizes the concepts of semiotics, educational theory, and spatial studies in order to explore different learning space designs, such as the traditional rows, circle designs, and flexible layouts. The configurations are discussed in terms of how reflect the authority, collaboration, inclusion, and agency, and how these meanings dominate student behaviour and participation relationships. The findings suggest that spatial design is not a neutral process; it is an active organization of the patterns of communication, due to which dialogue and involvement in the communication process are possible, or the passive learning stance may be taken. Flexible and student-centred arrangements are demonstrated to facilitate increased degrees of interaction, whereas fixed set-ups appear to inhibit interaction. The paper concludes by indicating that when educators and institutions want to improve participation, should take into account the semiotic implications of the design of the learning space. Through the identification of classrooms as communicative spaces, a possibility of establishing spaces that would facilitate inclusive and meaningful student participation emerges. This paper adds a theoretical framework of the relationship between spatial meaning and participation and provides implications for future research and pedagogy.
