Abstract

The character of the anti-hero, which previously was a secondary character in both literature and film, in present day has grown to the lead in the modern post-apocalyptic and dystopian narratives. Moral ambiguity, personal vices, and lack of conformity to societal values characterize the anti-hero, unlike the traditional heroic characters, who are moral and self-sacrificing. The paper will address how the anti-hero has evolved through the years in various genres and how it has changed over the years, beginning with the historical representation of the anti-hero in early literature, to the emergence of the anti-hero in modern television shows and movies. Focusing on some of the best examples of anti-heroes, such as Mad Max: Fury Road, Breaking Bad, and 1984, the paper discusses how these characters reflect anxieties and criticisms society levels at conventional morality, giving a more detailed and complex description of human action. The anti-hero must find his way in a world in which survival and opposition are valued over the conventional notions of good and evil in the post-apocalyptic and dystopian worlds. The anti-hero dismantles boundaries of traditional heroism, which implies the uncertainties and contradictions of contemporary life. At the end of the paper, an evaluation of the eternal status of the anti-hero in modern narratives, as a figure of opposition, uprising, and self-conflict in a broken and unpredictable world, is given.
