Abstract

This article discusses the influence of English on social and educational domains in
Thailand where the TESOL industry has become a lucrative business in the last two decades.
It then examines the concurrent role played by native English speaking countries over the
other countries where English has the status of a second or a foreign language with specific
attention to commercially produced ELT materials. Moreover, it reports the position of
native speakers (not native speaking English teachers) seeking teaching positions currently
in the Kingdom of Thailand. Finally, the article briefly suggests what local EFL teachers can
do to resist the dominating position of English in their own territories.
