Abstract

This poem portrays Shahmal as a symbolic mother figure representing the suffering, resilience, and enduring hope of the people of Kashmir. Through the tragic losses of her sons—caused by disappearance, accident, exile, and armed conflict—the poem reflects the pain experienced by countless families affected by violence and political struggle. Despite immense grief, Shahmal remains courageous and hopeful, embodying sacrifice, motherhood, and resistance. Her character transcends individual sorrow to become the “Mother of Kashmir,” symbolizing collective memory, revolution, and the emotional strength of women who continue to endure loss while preserving dreams of home, peace, and dignity.
